Triple WorldStar success for our ComforLid with Low Carbon Aluminum
Triple WorldStar success for our ComforLid with Low Carbon Aluminum Sustainability in Gold awarded at interpack 2026
Constantia Flexibles achieved outstanding recognition at interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, where its innovative ComforLid with Low Carbon Aluminum was honored with the WorldStar Special Award – Sustainability in Gold. The award was presented during the official WorldStar Award Ceremony on May 8, 2026, by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), marking a significant achievement within the company’s sustainability‑driven innovation strategy.
This latest distinction represents the third WorldStar Award for ComforLid and builds on the two WorldStar Awards the solution had already received earlier in the categories Packaging Materials and Components and Non‑Alcoholic Beverages.
From double WorldStar winner to Sustainability Gold
Following its initial success with two WorldStar Awards, ComforLid was crowned with the WorldStar Special Award – Sustainability in Gold, the highest distinction awarded within the Sustainability category of the WorldStar Awards. This award recognizes the solution’s performance across material innovation, functionality and environmental responsibility and represents a notable milestone for Constantia Flexibles and its teams.
All three awards were presented by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) during the ceremony at interpack, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for packaging and processing technologies.
WorldStar Special Award – Sustainability: focus on responsible material use
The WorldStar Special Award – Sustainability is dedicated to packaging solutions that demonstrate a responsible use of materials in line with the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore. It honors innovations that go beyond conventional sustainability approaches and demonstrate environmental benefits as assessed under the WPO’s evaluation criteria.
By awarding ComforLid with the Sustainability Gold Award, the WPO acknowledged a solution that contributes to advancements in packaging design while maintaining high technical and functional standards.
ComforLid: performance meets design
ComforLid is a patented packaging innovation developed by Constantia Flexibles as part of its Ecolutions product range, which focuses on solutions designed to support recycling and circularity. Originally developed for beverage and dairy applications, ComforLid replaces conventional snap‑on plastic lids and straws, with the aim of reducing overall material usage, while enhancing recyclability in appropriate collection and recycling systems and consumer convenience.
The lid features a dual‑layer structure combining Low Carbon Aluminum with a co‑extruded PP layer. This design enables material separability: consumers can peel off the aluminum layer for recycling via the aluminum stream, while the PP layer remains on the cup and is recyclable through established PP/PO systems, where suitable infrastructure exists. The structure is aligned with RecyClass Design for Recycling guidelines, based on the applicable guideline version at the time of development, supporting high‑quality material recovery.
Why ComforLid received the Sustainability Gold Award?
The WorldStar Special Award – Sustainability is granted to solutions that demonstrate strong performance across multiple sustainability criteria. ComforLid was recognized for its achievements in the following areas:
Responsible raw‑material sourcing
The Low Carbon Aluminum used for ComforLid is sourced from European suppliers certified by the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), reflecting adherence to ASI standards along the aluminum value chain.
• Material and source reduction
Targeted downgauging and the replacement of traditional snap‑on lids can reduce overall material usage without compromising performance. In combination with aluminum produced using renewable energy and recycled content, ComforLid enables a CO₂ footprint reduction of up to 43% for the lid, based on internal product carbon footprint calculations and defined assumptions. The downgauged design supports improved transport and storage efficiency, which may contribute to lower logistics‑related emissions.
• Recyclability and recovery
The clear separability of aluminum and PP supports effective post‑consumer recycling and circular material use, subject to consumer separation behavior and local waste‑management systems.
Designed for performance and consumer experience
In addition to its sustainability benefits, ComforLid offers strong functional and operational advantages. It is compatible with standard filling and sealing lines according to current application requirements, without need for equipment changes, and provides excellent barrier protection against oxygen, light and moisture, helping preserve product quality and shelf life.
