Safety Awards 2024: A culture worth recognizing, and a system that works
Walk through the halls of Constantia Teich and you will see it everywhere — people checking in on each other, flagging small risks before they grow, and taking pride in a workplace where everyone gets home safe. That is the spirit behind our Safety Awards.
While the event is a moment to celebrate, it’s built on a year’s worth of effort, tracked through our Safety Index — a system developed in-house to capture the full picture of safety performance.

How the Safety Index works
The Safety Index goes beyond counting accidents. It measures how teams actively create safer conditions and respond to potential risks. Here’s what goes into the score:
- Department size & risk profile: Adjusts for fairness, recognizing that bigger teams or higher-risk operations face different challenges.
- Accident-free days: Rewards consistent prevention over time.
- Hazard reporting: Encourages everyone to spot and share concerns early.
- Resolution speed: Gives credit for quick action to fix unsafe conditions.
- Sick leave impact: Factors in the effect of incidents on absenteeism, reinforcing the value of prevention.
This combination ensures the awards recognize vigilance, initiative, and teamwork. Every department has an equal chance of coming out on top in the award rankings. And even if an accident does happen, it can be compensated by reporting and eliminating unsafe conditions.

Recognition across the plant
In 2024, production and office teams were both part of the evaluation. That’s an important step — safety isn’t confined to the shop floor. From Printing to Plant Continuity Management, every role contributes to a safer workplace.
Some departments have gone years without a single accident, showing what happens when safety becomes habit. Others made notable strides in hazard spotting and process improvements. All have one thing in common: a shared responsibility for the wellbeing of colleagues.
More than an award
The Safety Awards may happen once a year, but the culture behind them is lived every day. It’s in the quick reminders between co-workers, the adjustments made when something doesn’t feel right, and the unspoken agreement that no deadline is worth risking someone’s safety.
By recognizing the behaviors and systems that drive results, the Safety Index keeps our safety culture moving forward.
