The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that the market value of fake antimalarial drugs is over USD 400 million in West Africa alone. In Southeast Asia, some 36 % of antimalarial drugs are counterfeit drugs. Although prevention efforts have been significantly raised since the turn of the millennium, malaria still kills 650,000 people worldwide every year.
