Paper, film, or aluminum? How to choose coffee packaging that protects flavor—and meets circularity targets
Packaging coffee is more than just a technical process — it is also a craft. You do not need to be a barista to know how delicate coffee beans and ground coffee are. Their aroma, the very soul of the brew, can vanish quickly if the product is not properly protected. That is why packaging plays a vital role in preserving coffee’s character. But the question remains: what is the best material to wrap around this precious product?
At Constantia Flexibles, we have spent years exploring that question. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, which is why our 360-degree material approach offers a wide range of solutions — each with unique strengths. Guided by life cycle assessments (LCA) and carbon footprint calculations, we work closely with customers to find the ideal option. Some customers arrive with a clear vision, often shaped by consumer expectations; others rely on our expertise. Either way, we provide choices — from paper to films to aluminum — all designed for recycling. Our goal: packaging that protects coffee’s soul and meets market demands and regulatory expectations.

Ways to package your coffee

Paper that protects — EcoPaperHighPlus
Let’s start with paper. Yes, paper can be a great choice for coffee packaging. Our EcoPaperHighPlus keeps the aroma fresh for up to 15 months after packing — especially ideal for instant coffee.
We developed a paper refill pack made of 85% paper. It offers high barriers against oxygen and moisture while maintaining strong seal integrity. This is no small feat, considering the complexity of creating effective barrier properties with paper.
But it is not just about performance. These packs are designed with the environment in mind. They are recyclable in standard paper waste streams and certified by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). By switching to paper pouches, brands are setting a new benchmark in eco-conscious coffee packaging.

Flexible films that lock in freshness — EcoVerHighPlus & EcoLamHighPlus
For ground coffee and whole beans, film-based solutions offer another powerful option. Our EcoVerHighPlus, a mono PP laminate, engineered to meet the demanding requirements of coffee packaging. It locks in aroma and freshness while offering a Designed for Recycling solution.
A key feature is the mono PP valve, which allows volatile gases to escape while keeping external gases out — a small detail that makes a big difference in maintaining coffee quality. In 2024, we launched one of the first recyclable mono PP laminates for coffee soft bags.
EcoVerHighPlus runs smoothly on form-fill-seal machines without any equipment changes. After a short optimization phase, the project became a success story.
Our EcoLamHighPlus, a mono PE laminate, delivers the same high-barrier performance and product protection as EcoVerHighPlus, offering another Designed for Recycling option for brands. Ideal for valve applications, this mono-solution replaces non-recyclable multi-polymer structures, including those incorporating aluminum, while ensuring excellent barriers to oxygen and water vapor as well as effective protection against MOSH/MOAH. With its high optical clarity, EcoLamHighPlus is available in metallized or white versions with gloss or matt finishes and can be fully printed using rotogravure or flexo, making it a more sustainable solution that does not compromise on functionality or visual appeal.
Structures are Designed for Recycling per RecyClass/CEFLEX guidance; formal evaluations available on request.

Compostable capsules — A complete solution
Coffee capsules are a staple in many homes, and now they are getting an upgrade. In partnership with Greiner Packaging, we have developed a fully home compostable capsule system certified “OK Compost Home” by TÜV Austria. Greiner provides the capsule body, while Constantia Flexibles contributes the EcoPressoLid.
This solution preserves freshness, works with conventional machines, and supports a circular economy. The EcoPressoLid is paper-based, offers a high oxygen barrier, and ensures excellent brewing performance. It is compatible with standard capsule filling and sealing machines, making it easy for producers to adopt.

Aluminum capsules — The espresso revolution
Aluminum capsules have become synonymous with espresso culture. Brewing under pressure in less than 25 seconds, they deliver a bold, aromatic experience that is hard to beat.
At Constantia Flexibles, we offer a wide range of aluminum-based lidding material that combines high performance, and design flexibility. It allows for full customization, with up to eight-color printing or shadow printing techniques that ensure strong shelf visibility. Embossing options further enhance brand differentiation, while it supports optimal brewing performance in the machine. The aluminum itself provides an exceptional barrier to preserve freshness and aroma.
Beyond the lid, our aluminum-based materials for capsule bodies combine various design possibilities, technical excellence, and environmental responsibility. Working closely with our customers, we co-develop tailored capsule solutions that meet the highest standards of quality and innovation.
For consumers, the benefits are clear: convenience, compatibility with various machines, and the freedom to choose their favorite coffee brands. Where take‑back or municipal capture exists, these capsules are recyclable; industry schemes already operate in 70+ countries, and national pilots are scaling capture.

AluKpod — A new chapter for Keurig® brewers
One of our most exciting innovations is AluKpod, the first aluminum pod designed for Keurig® brewers. Cambio Roasters in the US was among the first to adopt AluKpod, offering Designed for Recycling aluminum pods that deliver superior freshness, aroma, and taste. The pods are fully customizable with full-surface printing, making them a powerful tool for brand visibility.
Paired with our aluminium-based lid, which provides advanced sealing and barrier protection, AluKpod offers a premium coffee experience. It is already recyclable in selected US states — and it is paving the way for a more responsible future in single-serve coffee.
A story brewed with purpose
From paper to film, compostable capsules to aluminum pods, coffee packaging is a journey of innovation, sustainability, and precision. At Constantia Flexibles, we are proud to be part of this story — offering tailored solutions that protect the product, delight consumers, and respect the planet.
