·        Award for outstanding contribution toward conservation of resources and avoidance of waste

Vienna, November 16, 2016 – In cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW), the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) awards the "Smart Packaging State Prize" every two years. At the award ceremony, which took place for the 57th time yesterday, among others, the special prize from the recycling company ARA (Altstoff Recyling Austria) Group, for conservation of resources and avoidance of waste in the packaging branch, was awarded in the Wiener Aula der Wissenschaften (Vienna Auditorium of the Sciences). With its “Die Cut 2020” lid, Constantia Flexibles was able to convince the jury in the special category Conservation of Resources and Avoidance of Waste in the Packaging Branch.

The jury, which was made up of representatives of the organizing ministries, the ARA Group and other packaging experts, examined the entries from a total of 17 companies. The innovative, resource-conserving cup sealing system from Constantia Flexibles, which is used by Arla Foods amba, was able to prove itself. The user-friendly lid - that is, the foil that covers the product - can be opened smoothly and easily in one continuous movement. Through the marked reduction in materials of up to 30 %, the ecological respectively the carbon footprint is significantly reduced. Over and above this, the product is also solvent-free, thanks to the use of UV Flexographic printing. Furthermore, it constitutes solvent-free packaging.

“We optimize our packaging solutions continuously, develop environment friendly production processes and focus on the sustainable use of materials. Winning the ARA’s special prize is wonderful recognition of our commitment in the areas of conservation of resources and avoidance of waste,” says Dr. Gerold Riegler, Chief Technology Officer at Constantia Flexibles.

Special process for convenient and sustainable packaging

To a large degree, the realization of the innovative “Die Cut 2020” lid was made possible by the development of a high-performance extrusion coating. In combination with sealing temperatures of 200 to 280°C (392 to 536°F), sensitivity towards naturally occurring fluctuations of temperature and pressure at the filling machines is reduced.

This type of coating seals particularly well and makes the lid tear-resistant, although the aluminum, at only 20 µm, is very thin. The result is a lid that is both easy to process and easy for the customer to remove.
